Farmers from Petite Bordel, Rose Bank, Troumaca, Rose Hall and Spring Village participated in training workshop in Vetiver Systems Technology between18th-22nd March in Rose Bank. Sponsored by the GEF Small Grants Programme, 21 farmers received the theory, science and practical applications of Vetiver Systems Technology.
Farmers received practical experience in land contouring, plant preparation, planting and soil microbiology. Soil samples from their farms were tested to determine the ph and soil composition.
The GEF Small Grants Programme project has also provided funding for Hand2Earth to establish 4 vetiver nurseries in Belmont, Troumaca Bottom and Bottom Village
A total of 55 farmers from the North leeward area have received training in Vetiver Systems Technology since Hand2Earth’s Farmland Restoration initiative began in 2022.
The vetiver plant is highly effective for erosion control and ground water retention, as well as restoring soil quality for improved crop yield.
Participants are supported in installing vetiver systems in their farms are provided with plants and tools, vegetable seeds and ongoing technical support.
Hand2Earth’s Vetiver Systems Trainer, Ms. Vonnie Roudette states that the project in this area is of special significance since it is the site of historic vetiver hedgerows that were planted 100 years ago for soil conservation- the majority having been destroyed resulting in widespread land erosion and loss of topsoil.
With Support of the UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme, the project continues with a Vetiver Heritage Educational Site development, farm site establishment, vetiver craft training workshop, and ongoing community education activities.
